PDF Accessibility Remediation Services

Make PDF documents easier to navigate and understand with assistive technology. UCS reviews document structure and remediates accessibility barriers against an agreed delivery specification.

For publishers, educational institutions and organisations managing reports, manuals, learning materials or a backlog of public documents.

What the service covers

Assess the source documents

Review sample PDFs, page counts, document complexity and available source files. Identify scanned pages, complex tables, forms, equations and other items that affect effort.

Remediate document structure

Work on tags, headings, lists, reading order, document language and navigation. Review meaningful images and alternatives; agree how subject-specific descriptions will be approved.

Handle complex content

Review table headers and relationships, links and form controls where present. Discuss content changes or source-file corrections when the PDF cannot be reliably repaired in place.

Validate and review the output

Combine validation checks with manual QA and assistive-technology review appropriate to the scope. Record unresolved constraints and retest fixes before delivery.

What you receive

  • Remediated PDFs for the agreed document set.
  • A validation and QA summary against the agreed requirements.
  • A record of exceptions, content queries and source limitations.
  • A repeatable approach for recurring document batches when required.

PDF/UA support and applicable WCAG requirements must be agreed for the document set. Passing a validator alone does not establish that a document is usable or satisfies every requirement. Scanned or complex content may need source corrections and specialist review.

Questions before you start

Can you remediate scanned PDFs?

Scanned documents may need OCR and careful text verification before structure can be remediated. A sample review is needed to assess image quality, text accuracy and the delivery approach.

Can you handle a large document backlog?

UCS can discuss batch delivery, prioritisation and quality review. Share the number of files, total page count, document types and expected turnaround so the work can be scoped.

Do you need the original Word or design files?

Editable source files can make some corrections more reliable and help future updates. UCS will review the supplied PDF and advise when source files or content-owner decisions are needed.
